A pair of wasps.  Is that all that is needed to start a colony?  They were busy at work and didn’t fly away.

Earlier on a higher branch, last year’s hornet’s nest.  Apparently the hornet’s won’t return here, but start again, just as these wasps are starting anew.

Further upstream another pair of wasps were busy starting a colony.
